NECHAMA extends project to aid more households by November

It has been a month since NECHAMA launched flood response efforts here in Baton Rouge, LA and what a month it has been!

To date, 300 NECHAMA volunteers have come in from all over the world to lend a hand.  With more than 6,000 hours of direct service in the books, we’ve been able to provide direct flood cleanup assistance to 43 families in need and counting.

One of those families NECHAMA was able to help out was Ms. Chris and her 3 year old daughter.  Ms. Chris had worked hard for many years to finally purchase her home and bought it just three weeks before the flood. She didn’t have flood insurance and when her home took on over 6 feet of water, every last thing she and her daughter owned, was destroyed.  With nowhere else to turn, Ms. Chris found NECHAMA. One morning, NECHAMA volunteers showed up with loads of tools and plenty of hands to start cleaning up Ms. Chris’ home.  After two long days, every inch of the home had been cleaned out.  When the teams left, Ms. Chris sent them off with flowers and a card that read, “For you’re among the nicest people I have ever known, and you’ll never be forgotten for the thoughtfulness you’ve shown.”

For these surviving families, each day that passes without receiving assistance means a heavier financial burden and a home that only becomes more overrun with dangerous mold.  Recognizing the overwhelming unmet needs for cleanup services in Baton Rouge, NECHAMA is officially extending our flood response operations through November 1st.

NECHAMA has a goal of providing direct cleanup assistance to 100 Baton Rouge families in need but we cannot do it alone! With that said, if you’d like to come join us to volunteer for a day/week/month, please click here to register to volunteer.  If you are unable to make it down to Louisiana, you can also make a difference by donating
