NECHAMA – Jewish Response to Disaster has long been committed to aiding communities in times of crisis. Our hands-on disaster relief embodies the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) and creates strong connections between Jewish people and the communities we serve. Since arriving in North Carolina on October 6, 2024, our team has completed 37 recovery projects and logged over 6,000 volunteer hours. In Buncombe and Henderson counties, we have focused on rebuilding homes, distributing essential relief supplies, and supporting families as they recover from the devastation.
As part of NECHAMA’s broader initiative to combat antisemitism in Western North Carolina and to participate in the National Days of Jewish Service, we are proud to host two impactful events later this month. These events will serve those in need, challenge harmful stereotypes, promote understanding, and build bridges through action and education.
Yom HaShoah: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future
Date: Wednesday, April 23, 2025
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. (ET)
Location: Online
Renée Fink, a Holocaust survivor who was hidden as a child with a Catholic Dutch family, will share her powerful story of survival and resilience. Now residing in Chapel Hill, she continues to educate and inspire, and it is a privilege to host her for this important event.
Additionally, we are honored to host Kathy Manning, former U.S. Congresswoman, who will share remarks on Holocaust remembrance and the ongoing fight against antisemitism. The program will also include an Ecumenical prayer led by Rev. Kelsey Davis, Bishop’s Deputy for Disaster Response & Recovery, Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina.

Good Deeds Day: Spreading Hope Through Action
Date: Sunday, April 27, 2025
Time: 12:00 – 3:30 p.m. (ET)
Location: Agudas Israel Synagogue, Hendersonville, North Carolina
National Days of Jewish Service, a Repair the World initiative, aims to mobilize Jewish volunteers to perform meaningful acts of service and learning. Good Deeds Day, a global celebration of volunteering, embodies this ethos by mobilizing volunteers to show up, care for all individuals regardless of faith, and work side by side with their neighbors.
This year, NECHAMA and Agudas Israel will host volunteers from churches throughout Henderson County to assemble relief packages for victims of Hurricane Helene. Many of Helene’s survivors feel disconnected, worried that the help is gone. With this project, we want to send a clear message:
We see you; We are here; You are not alone.
