As we enjoy this week of Thanksgiving and slow down to spend time with family, eating much more then we should, I want to take a few minutes to reflect on what I am most thankful for here at NECHAMA. It’s been an eventful year for us – from new leadership and staff, to an unprecedented response to two simultaneous Category 4 hurricanes.
The Driven NECHAMA Staff
From the cornfields of Waseca, MN to the streets of Houston, Jacksonville, and Flagler Beach – the incredible staff of NECHAMA have responded to events across the country, assisting more than 210 storm-affected families.
They have responded to disasters in multiple states, working long hours in heat and cold, and moved our warehouse into its new location, all to bring comfort to survivors.
I’m especially grateful for those my staff leave behind when they deploy – husbands, wives, and kids. Their sacrifice and support make it possible for our staff to get the job done, and are as much a part of the NECHAMA team as anyone.
Our Dedicated Volunteers
581 volunteers have made it their mission to live in the spirit of Tikkun Olam and provide hope and comfort to families affected by the numerous natural disasters this year. This incredible group of volunteers have donated more than 15,000 hours of their time to communities in need. Without them, NECHAMA could not do its work, fulfill its mission, and bring comfort to those in need.
Among these volunteers is our Board of Directors, who have worked with me hand-in-hand to continue to bring stability and a sense of direction to the organization as we map out our future.
NECHAMA’s Generous Donors
When Harvey and Irma made landfall, we turned to our supporters and put out the call for assistance. In order to respond to these events we needed their support to build a second fleet, buy gear and hire additional staff. I did not expect the incredible generosity that came next. In three months, donors flooded us with gifts to support our work, making our deployments possible and changing lives.
We are funded entirely by these donations. I am so thankful for the trust our donors have shown us to steward their gifts and put them to use helping communities.
Exceptional Community Partners
The staff of NECHAMA work in partnership with so many great organizations, I can’t even begin to name them all. Without their support and comradery we would be unable to do so much of the work that is needed. From support on the ground, free airfare, tools, food, and housing, to fundraising drives and donated supplies. We are indebted to your support, and so thankful for your friendship.
I wish you all a good Thanksgiving, especially to our staff and volunteers spending the holiday in Jacksonville and Houston away from their families.
In service,
David Kaplan
Executive Director
